This incredibly special project has been the beginning for me in many ways. I had been playing the violin for a long time but had never composed or conducted. I really wanted to do something with music because I knew that was where my passion lies. I thought about how I could challenge myself as far as possible and came up with composing and performing a 4-part symphony for strings. For this I would have to learn to compose and to conduct as well as practical things such as arranging an string orchestra and a venue to perform and, of course, also a way to record all of this. And that in one year! I can't emphasise how important this project has been for me and how much I have learned from it. This has been a massive incentive to go study at the conservatory and since this project I know in my heart that I want to become a conductor.
See the video of the end result here. If you would like to read more about this project, you can find the report at the bottom of this page.
Through Harmonys Journey I was able to experience for the first time what it is like to be a conductor. This involves things such as rehearsing with an orchestra, conveying musicality, leadership, organisational skills but also; a base of beating technique, an independent left hand for entrances, dynamics, phrasing, expression and much more. It is the combination of all these things, that makes conducting so appealing to me. I really enjoy working with an orchestra. What has helped me tremendously as a beginning conductor is all the experience I had already gained from playing in different orchestras. I have been asked to perform this work 3 more times since then, and each time conducting came more naturally.
I now have the opportunity to work with an orchestra on a weekly basis. This is the Antonio Ensemble in Zutphen, an amateur string orchestra conducted by Jaap van Elst. Here I can further develop myself as a conductor and prepare for the future. In addition, I remain open to further possibilities and projects. After studying violin, I will devote myself completely to orchestral conducting.
